I just killed an enormous bug. I think it was a googlepede.

I'm playing two shows this week. One Friday in Lakewood and one Saturday in Marietta.

I'm excited to see if my new balanced cable will enhance my sound at all.

Still off the radar a bit but getting better. Keep an eye on my audio yweets @seanbenjamin on Twitter

It has been a long time since I have:

a.) made a journal entry on here

b.) made a podcast

c.) paid close attention to my myspace, facebook and other sites

d.) sent out an email to my list

And its not because I have slowed the pace of my work on my career. Just that I have been taking a different approach and taking a little time to work on somethings that I need to work out to be a better performer, writer, manager, worker.

Making an album is difficult work, and it usually involves a lot of people; mine is no different.

I have myself, my label, my producer, my engineers, my photographer and quite possibly other musicians that in the end will have contributed to the release of my first real studio album.  This album was expected to be released much sooner, and probably could have been if it weren't for all of the shows which I have been playing and promoting over the past year as well as the geographic distance between my producer and I. With that said I assure you that the wheels are back in motion to make the best CD that I can make.

Live CD

In addition to that, at the request of some fans and of my own desire I will be releasing a live acoustic album as well very shortly. This will be quite possibly before the release of the studio album and will more than likely be limited to digital distribution (i.e. iTunes, Amazon, Rhapsody, Napster).

Breather

It is possible that last year and the beginning of this year I may have spread myself a bit thin, which is why my label has stepped up to take over certain responsibilities from me which will add to the project. This is also beneficial to my physical, mental and emotional condition as the way I used to operate could test the limits of my strength.

Also, I have been working on new material that will probably not make either release but will make releases in the future. They are more acoustic based songs than will be on the studio album but vary from genre to genre. The only place to hear these songs currently is at a show.

East Coast

A lot of people have asked me when I will play on the east coast again. I would say probably immediately following the release of the studio album. This will of course include New York City, New Jersey, Washington D.C. and Baltimore and hopefully Long Island, Boston, Raleigh-Durham, Chapel Hill and Burlington.

Digital Music

My iPhone has made me a faithful and obedient consumer of digital music on iTunes and Amazon.com. I have certainly increased the number of downloads per month and also started downloading entire albums because sometimes they have great deals going. I also have discovered a great store in the cleveland area called BuyBacks which is like a CD/Game exchange store but very organized.

My Current Playlist

Lately I would say I have been listening to a wider variety of music, probably a bit of a consolidation of what I have listened to in my young adult life. The most of which being off of:

A Grand Don't Come for Free - The Streets

Unplugged - Alice in Chains

Parachutes - Coldplay

Everything is Borrowed - The Streets

Abbey Road - The Beatles

Rubber Soul - The Beatles

Love - The Beatles

Aja - Steely Dan

Friendly Fire - Sean Lennon

TP-2.com - R. Kelly

Division Bell - Pink Floyd

1977 - Ash

with a lot of other stuff mixed in.

The Streets = Sean is excited about music again

But I feel like I need to mention especially a few things especially as this is the reason why I even got on my computer.

Tonight I downloaded the whole album of "Everything is Borrowed" from The Streets and I had downloaded a few songs when it came out last year but I guess was too lazy to look into the rest. Its a little more rare lately that I will instantly love an album. Older ones, its easy, not because they're older, just because back then an album was more important. Its not like we haven't had good albums in the last decade. Songs About Jane, O, Waiting for My Rocket to Come and A Rush of Blood to the Head come to mind right off the bat. But if you were to go back and look at how many great albums by ratio to total albums came out in the 70s, 80s or 90s compared to today, I'm sure the difference would be staggering.

Anyways back to being upbeat.

"Everything is Borrowed" is phenomenal. Just like a lot of other things Mike Skinner has done this album is start to finish enjoyable for at home or in the car.  My first experience with The Streets was with a former co-worker, when "Dry Your Eyes" off of the album "A Grand Don't Come for Free" came on his Sirius radio.

When I got home I went to the myspace and official site and then went out and bought that CD (which incidentally might be my favorite album too). I listened to it a lot and eventually bought a lot of other songs by the artist from the UK. Then I proudly showed it to my friends who almost 100% of them hated it, some of them have since come around and really enjoy it.

My mom taught preschool with Donald Fagen's sister.. true story

On a different note..

I also purchased the 2003 release "Everything Must Go" from the band Steely Dan, which has long been one of my favorites. Steely Dan has a pretty distinct sound with amazing chord movement, excellent keyboard and backing vocal and Donald Fagen's awesomely cool voice. A lot of people know "Do it Again" and "Rikki Don't Lose that Number" and "Realing in the Years" but there wasn't a really big hit off of this album. With that said, I bought it for 5 dollars brand new and its one of the best albums I've ever heard. No surprise though, I pretty much like every Steely Dan song I've ever heard. In fact, let me go back and say... yes I like every Steely Dan song I've ever heard. Can't say that about some of my other favorite bands.. I'm looking at you Beatles, DMB, Jason Mraz, Maroon 5, Toad the Wet Sprocket, Alice in Chains.. Don't think I forgot about Revolution 9...

I Like Stand Up Comedy

Ok.. now its time for comedy...

Ricky Gervais is really really funny. I'll bet half of you are saying... yeah I know and the other half don't know who Ricky Gervais is. Okay so do yourself a favor and go to YouTube and type in Ricky Gervais  Animals and watch away. You're welcome.

Patton Oswalt, David Cross, Louis CK and Patrice O'Neal should be next in your You Tube searching.

I'd rather go buy movie popcorn and watch a DVD at home because I hate the groups of "individuals" at the movie theatres

Movies.. haven't seen any.. seriously. you have seen everything and I have seen nothing, not the Hangover, not Star Trek.. nothing..

I saw I Love You Man and Angels and Demons and liked both of them.

I just got around to seeing Watchmen on DVD. Here's the thing with that movie. I heard a lot of people hated it, I don't know why you would hate it. It was a pretty good movie, it just wasn't as good or long as it could have been. It probably should have been 2 or 3 movies to develop some more of the characters and plot, but it was better than either Hulk movie.

My TV is still at least 2 feet deep

TV..

Still on my Burn Notice kick, but I've added NCIS, Law & Order: SVU and Bully Beatdown to my "will watch whenever its on" list

AM/FM button has dust on it

Radio..

Opie and Anthony from 6-11 SIRIUS 197 XM 202, Ron and Fez from 11-3 SIRIUS 197 XM 202, Jason Ellis from 3-7 SIRIUS 28? XM 52.. iTunes after that or replay as I probably didn't get to sit in my car all day and listen to my favorite shows.

Okay done sucking up for now.. I'll be back again someday

Iphone

  • Mar. 21st, 2009 at 1:42 AM

So yeah I got an iPhone. Maybe this will encourage me to do more posts on here. Lately I have been working on getting the rest of the cd out. I'm pretty sure we have all the songs picked out. We do not however have a name. Any suggestions?

All Over the Place

  • Jan. 13th, 2009 at 2:48 AM

Wow I am tired,
the Nyquil or whatever I took for my cold just kicked in about 2 hours too late and I am thinking this will be a short post.

Back when I was diagnosed with some sleep disorders I was prescribed Ambien which would have made these blogs even more interesting. I remember my phone calls and instant messenger conversations on that stuff were ridiculous.

I played in Lakewood at Merry Arts Pub again on Friday night this past weekend. I've played there several times. Sometimes it seems like I am background music there but this time was not at all like that. This show was awesome.

Despite my cold, I was able to put on a good show and mixed in some new stuff most people hadn't heard. Including debuting a brand new song "Don't Let Me Live" or whatever I may decide to call it.

It went so well I will definitely include it in the set list for Friday Night at the Robin Hood in Kent and Saturday Night at the Book & Bean in Berea.

The digital ep is virtually out there, just waiting for one more online marketplace to approve then its on!

Keep checking back..............

big things to come.. better be at the shows.. i'm keeping track

A Merry Christmas Message from SBJ

  • Dec. 25th, 2008 at 2:22 AM

Hello and Merry Christmas to you and your families,

I do love this holiday though I must admit, my meaning of Christmas does differ from the original intent. Mine is about being with my family and about the movement of peace and love all over to make a more perfect world.

Remember this Christmas, that while not everyone may celebrate your holiday the same way or at all, we can wish everyone a happy, bright and peaceful future. We can hope that our neighbors of whatever race, gender, religion or sexual orientation have a good year this year, and always.

May your December dreams come true,

Sean B

coming soon! a lot...

  • Dec. 3rd, 2008 at 12:57 AM

As I listen to Christmas music on XM Radio's "Holiday Traditions" I am hoping that I can fight off the cold that may be creeping back.

Why? Well cause I do have some shows coming up.. I'd like to have a few more..

I had one that may be cancelled or moved or postponed or rescheduled very soon. So I am waiting to hear back on that one. I hope I can book a few more shows before the holidays so I can a.) do my holiday material and b.) get good gifts for my family.

But...

THE GOOD NEWS...

there is going to be new material coming soon! New MP3s, New Pictures, New Video, New Designs for the sites. I don't know the launch date yet, but the countdown will start soon.

If you haven't been to a show in a while.. here's whats been up.

A few weekends ago, the 22nd I believe I played at the good ol' KENT STAGE which is in KENT, OHIO.. Its an amazing venue with a big theatre/auditorium feel. Which means great sound, I kinda wish the crowd was a bit more lively but because of the seats they were just kinda chilling. I guess I'm still use to that bar/club atmosphere. The show was a big festival to benefit Polycystic Kidney Disease, and a lot of great bands performed for the cause including my good friends Winslow and David Ullman.

The following weekend I played at a very small place in my parents hometown called Arabica, which is a franchise around the Cleveland area. I played at the Solon one, the place was packed way too many people in there (not that i'm complaining) but the staff said they we're not equipped to handle that many.

Lately, I have been watching a lot of standup comedy on YouTube before I go to bed instead of TV or DVDs, mostly because my DVD player is broken for whatever reason... anyways, Ricky Gervais is quickly becoming my favorite in a neck and neck and neck tie with Louis CK and David Cross. After becoming addicted to Gervais' shows "Extras" and "The Office" and hearing Gervais on the Opie and Anthony show, I decided to check out "Animals", "Politics" and "Fame" his comedy specials. FUNNY.

In other news, I finally know someone else with a HELIO!!!!!! finally someone who I never talk to on the phone I can talk to for free.. wonderful, he's a good guy and all, we just don't talk on the phone, it would be nice if some of my really close friends and family got on helio. Its a great service.. all the plans are unlimited internet, text and pic messaging.. plus the service works virtually everywhere in America. No touch screen phones yet but the Ocean has pretty much everything else that the iPhone has. Eventually Helio will probably get one and when they do, I'll get it, it would take a lot to pry me away from Helio..

the BAD news...

Opie and Anthony are no longer on Cleveland or Boston's CBS radio stations, which means I will no longer have a reason to listen to terrestrial radio from 6-9 in the morning in Cleveland anymore.. Its a good thing I've been an XM subscriber for several years and I can still listen to the boys live from 6-11 every day. then the replays at 3 and 7.

Its sucks because terrestrial radio is turning into pretty much listening to an iPod or Pandora .. which means, whats the point.. new music?! diversity?! not really, its difficult to find that even on the edgy stations.

I like my XM or should I say Sirius XM.. because they have so many different stations and good personalities playing the songs, not just a computer.. plus O&A and other good shows. Plus I can listen to it in my car, or right now I am on my computer... they have portable ones too.

Its not like all regular radio is bad.. Cleveland used to have a great station called 107.9 the End .. it was back in the 90s and they played the best alternative rock.. now you could say that its a result of not having as good of music for the alt stations to play.. but really there are barely any alt stations to support emerging alt artists...

Now I'm not one of those indie fight the big corporations guys.. I like a lot of pop music. But it would be nice if you could also hear some Toad the Wet Sprocket or Sponge or XTC. You kinda can sometimes on CD101 in Columbus which is a great station.. you definitely can on Sirius XM 54 and 44 and 9.

At one point 92.3 in Cleveland was kinda like that.. they went from a Nu Rock station to a somewhat alt rock station.. I was so excited the day I heard Live - "Lightning Crashes" and then Alice in Chains - "Grind" back to back..

So lets just pray that radio works itself out soon, that the stations realize that if I only wanted to hear music, I can do that elsewhere, I listened to The End , The Buzzard, and Xtreme Radio because of their personality and their personalities.

Now. if you want to get a Sirius XM receiver.. the service is about 12.99/month so like 2 trips to subway/month.

The receivers are pretty cheap on www.myradiostore.com

go get one soon, like before january

OLD XANGA ENTRIES

  • Back from NYC!

Well I would love to do a podcast right now,

but I can barely hear what I'm saying due to a bit of an ear infection. Its a good thing I don't have shows coming up this week, though I am probably going to be better in a few days.

So its been a busy couple of weeks.

Shows across Ohio from Columbus, Cleveland, Akron and Marietta.

At a few of the shows we had some technical difficulties, but we were able to discover the root of the problem and it is being worked on.

To give you an idea of the past week.. I played an on campus show at the University of Akron and it was quite a long one. Then I played a show at the Marietta Brewing Company and didn't get out until very late at night, like 2 a.m., when I drove back up to Cleveland. Woke up the next day and left for NYC around 4:30pm in a car that was less than reputable.

    1025080004

Starbucks in NYC area have a bigger menu of food.

    1026080004

Riverside Park in Morningside, Manhattan, NY

    1026080039

    I'm obsessed with Chinatown

While in New York City, we did some promo work from 7am to Midnight almost everyday and then on the way home.. the car of course broke down.

    1027080008

The car I drove home instead.

Now I can't fill you in on what all we did in New York, but.. the news will break pretty soon. I can say that despite the long hours and hard work coupled with a complete destruction of my self image.. I had a blast and grew the family a bit when it comes to the music biz.

    More info to come..

    REMEMBER TO VOTE! Please..

It seems like there are a lot of battle ground states .. so don't say you're vote doesn't count.. it does.

Plus the more percentage of the popular vote your candidate gets, the more political capital they have. If they get a big majority they can more easily push for their policies and thats important for a country looking for change.

If you didn't register in time, you can still make a difference.. Go to your candidate's website and get information as to how you can drive more votes in their direction.

Wow look at how non-partisan I am being.. it must be the ear infection.

    Ok.. I'll be back later

Monday, June 30, 2008

  • Ok, its time again I think for me to endorse certain products, places and things. I do this from time to time because I like to introduce people to things they might like.

Plus it gives you XMAS/Hanukkah Ideas...

    cause you missed my birthday...

Ok, so lets spread the good word..

    : : : Melt Bar & Grilled - Lakewood, Ohio : : :

So I went to this place I had never been to before, Melt. Its on Detroit Ave in Lakewood. If you don't know Lakewood, Detroit is where a lot of the Bars on the west side of cleveland are. I've played at a lot of them. But this place has really really good food. Specializes in sandwiches, they all sound amazing. I had the Blackened Chicken Sandwich and loved it, great fries too. Huge beer selection and some really cool drinks besides that too.

    : : : Burn Notice - Season 1 DVD : : :

This is one of my favorite TV shows ever. New season starts again on July 10th but you can catch up with the DVD. It is worth it. Think Bourne movies mixed with McGuyver or however you spell it and then throw in some comedy. Perfect casting and great dialogue. Check it out online or something first but its worth the money.

    : : : David Gilmour - Remember That Night DVD : : :

This concert DVD has a lot more than just the concert. But even if thats all it had it would top 99% of live performances. The guitarist and singer from Pink Floyd has Rick Wright and other regular bandmates join him on stage. But also is joined by Crosby, Nash and David Bowie. Gilmour performances his entire new album "On an Island" in order but also includes classic Floyd tunes. Wish he would have done Cruise and There's No Way Out of Here but what can you do. If you like Floyd or if you like relaxing tunes and incredible musicians pick it up.

    : : : TNT, USA and TBS : : :

Ok, lately these particular Television stations have been showing some great movies. So even though I don't have the good ol' Cinemax or HBO, I can at least watch some good stuff. Then I realize I already bought them on DVD.. thanks Hollywood Video's Buy 2 get 2 free sale.

    : : : Steelyard Shopping Plaza - Cleveland, Ohio : : :

They built a strip mall just south of Downtown in the Steel plant area called Steelyard. Its got a Target, Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Best Buy, Famous Footwear, Chipotle, Starbucks, Steak and Shake, IHOP, Game Stop, Dots, Applebees and some other stuff. I want more people to go there so they will keep developing. Its a convinient location, it just needs a little support.

    : : : Gateway District - Downtown Cleveland, Ohio : : :

I am changing my tune and I am going to try to believe in Cleveland as opposed to insulting our recent shortcomings. So I have explored some areas to brag about. When I was on the way home from a show the other night, I stopped in the Gateway District, Prospect and Huron. Its really nice at night, a lot of places to go. Go check it out sometime, and while you're at it, stop by the Warehouse District too. The way to make Cleveland better is to support the businesses downtown and also to move down there if you can. Living and Working downtown could also help you cut your gasoline needs. which brings me too...

    : : : New York MF'n City : : :

I come from suburban Cleveland, Ohio. An area very afraid of a lot of things. Most people in my neighborhood take a really long and out of the way trek to get downtown if you know what I mean. Because they should? No.. because they were told certain things about certain areas years ago and never bothered to go see if its true. For the most part, the stories your friends and the media will tell you about neighborhoods you don't live in are false or exaggerated.

Like New York City, I was really intimedated to travel there for the first time a few months ago. But after I got off the train and walked up from Penn Station to outside of Madison Square Garded, well I was still overwhelmed. It was 8:40 and we wanted to get all the way up to 57th street by 8:50 to catch the Opie and Anthony walkover. After being able to catch the show and getting out and walking to Central Park, things calmed down.

Finally I was able to enjoy the city, and I did. So much so that it is my strong wish to move there as soon as possible. The food is better, there is more to do, I wouldn't have to drive anywhere and you can meet interesting people and experience your favorite things first hand. Like your favorite TV shows and standup comics or radio shows.

I was more interested in the different neighborhoods of Manhattan than the tourist type attractions. Growing up I was and am a geography nerd so I wanted to see all the areas I had seen on the maps, like Soho and the East Village and China Town.

    ------------

Ok so there's the things I dig right now, next time, things I don't.. watch out Downtown Winking Lizard, for f'ing up all my orders of late, and Dunkin Donuts, you are probably not going to want to read it either. Steelyard wal-mart too..
